Valleseco might be one of Gran Canaria’s lesser-visited spots, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. Nestled in the lush interior of the island, this peaceful area is a haven for nature lovers and those looking to escape the crowds. Despite its name, meaning “dry valley,” Valleseco is actually one of the greenest areas on the island, with over 80% designated as a Protected Natural Area.

Surrounded by deep ravines, ancient laurel forests, and rolling hills, Valleseco offers endless opportunities for outdoor exploration. Whether you’re keen to hike through untouched landscapes, enjoy a picnic by the lagoon, or immerse yourself in local traditions, there’s plenty to discover here. The area’s small but charming villages also provide a glimpse into traditional Canarian life, with rustic architecture and a laid-back atmosphere.

Here are some of the best things to see and do in Valleseco:

La Laguna Recreational Area

Located within the Doramas Rural Park, La Laguna is a volcanic crater now teeming with native flora. This recreational spot features picnic areas equipped with barbecues and fresh water set beneath a canopy of trees. Bird enthusiasts will appreciate the lagoon, which attracts species ranging from local canaries to migratory herons. An on-site birdwatching observatory enhances the experience.

Barranco de la Virgen

This picturesque ravine, part of the Doramas Rural Park, shelters remnants of the island’s ancient laurel forests. Flanked by towering mountains, the area offers tranquil hiking paths where visitors can immerse themselves in the serene sounds of nature. Along the trails, traditional Canarian houses dot the landscape, reflecting the region’s historical charm.

Church of San Vicente Ferrer

At the heart of Valleseco stands the Church of San Vicente Ferrer, constructed in 1898. Its simple architecture houses a Mudéjar-style coffered ceiling and a historic 18th-century German organ, originally from the Church of El Pino in Teror. The church also safeguards valuable religious artifacts, including a reliquary containing a bone fragment of Saint Vincent Ferrer.

Valleseco Municipal Market (Ecological Market)

For a taste of local life, visit the municipal market open every Sunday morning. Here, you’ll find an array of locally grown produce, traditional handicrafts, wooden furniture, and vibrant plants and flowers. It’s an ideal spot to purchase unique souvenirs and experience the community’s vibrant atmosphere.

Hiking and Nature Trails

Valleseco’s extensive network of trails caters to hikers and cyclists alike. Routes wind through lush forests, past cascading streams, and offer panoramic views of the island’s diverse landscapes. Whether you’re seeking a leisurely walk or a challenging trek, the area’s natural beauty provides a captivating backdrop.

Taxis offer a convenient, though more expensive, alternative:

• From Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: A taxi ride takes approximately 35 minutes and costs between €45-€60.
• From Gran Canaria Airport: The journey is about 40 minutes, with fares ranging from €50-€65.

Most organised tours don’t typically include a visit to Valleseco’s town centre, but many include the beautiful surrounding countryside for hiking, mountainbiking and even cider and cheese tasing (on of our favourites).

Most tours depart from popular hubs like Las Palmas, Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, and Puerto Rico.

Tours often visit nearby towns like Teror and Arucas, giving you a taste of local culture beyond Valleseco.

What to Eat and Drink in Arucas

Valleseco’s cuisine is deeply rooted in its fertile lands and pastoral traditions. Meat dishes are particularly prominent, with specialties like “mojo de cochino” (pork served with a traditional Canarian sauce), goat stew, marinated pork and rabbit, beef stew, and roasted pork leg. Vegetable-based dishes also feature, such as vegetable stew with jaramagos (wild mustard greens), watercress stew, and coriander soup served with kneaded toasted cornmeal and goat cheese.

A standout local product is the organic cider produced in Valleseco. Crafted from the area’s abundant apple orchards, this cider offers a crisp and refreshing accompaniment to the hearty local dishes. Visitors can sample this unique beverage at establishments like the Gastrobar Sidrería Niebla, located within the Valleseco Ecological Market.

• Restaurante Los Arcos de La Laguna: Renowned for its roast suckling pig and other high-quality meats and cheeses sourced from the Valleseco region. We really love their salads, especially their Chicken Caesar Salad. Plus, don’t miss their delicious desserts.
• Gastrobar Sidrería Niebla: Situated next to the Valleseco Ecological Market, this spot offers a variety of dishes for lunch and dinner, complemented by different varieties of locally produced cider.
• Restaurante Valleseco K-Tane: Known for its variety of dishes, including salads, soups, and pork specialties, this cozy restaurant is located in the heart of Valleseco’s countryside, around 1km outside the town centre.
